The Road to Recovery
Working with clients with sexual abuse history
This training is intended for graduates of Core Energetics Institutes who want to learn how to guide people with a history of sexual abuse from victimhood to empowered, resilient survivorship. It incorporates the latest research on effective treatment for clients who have experienced sexual abuse, drawing on contemporary findings and techniques from leading trauma specialists.
The program is both psychoeducational and experiential. Participants will study the specific needs of clients affected by various forms of sexual violence. In addition to reviewing Core Energetics theory and Polyvagal concepts, students will practice somatic skills such as body mapping, recognizing triggers, and dismantling shame and guilt. Psychosomatic symptoms and sexual dysfunction will be addressed, along with perspectives offered by religions and spiritual teachings on this aspect of a person’s life journey.
Students will also develop and practice coping skills essential for therapists working with sexual trauma. Practical tools will be covered in depth—for example, how to assess timing and structure conversations when taking a sexual-abuse history, whether the client discloses sexual abuse explicitly or there are only hints or suspicions of it. The curriculum includes techniques for building confidence with this population: understanding survivors’ resistance, working with explicit and implicit memory, diffusing triggers, managing dissociation as an adaptive strategy, processing unwelcome emotions, and ultimately supporting clients in reclaiming their sexual power.
